Student Volunteers & Employment
The Discovery Lab is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to take the lead in managing lab Technical Spaces and directing programs.
The lab’s team of volunteer and paid Peer Leaders are trained to operate the Discovery Lab’s specialized instruments, analyze data, communicate research findings, and support other lab users to transform their ideas into reality.

Volunteer Opportunities
Peer Lab Assistants
Peer Lab Assistants work with Peer Lab Specialists and Discovery Lab faculty and staff to ensure classes hosted in the lab and other programs run smoothly. Their primary responsibilities are to maintain Discovery Lab essential infrastructure and ensuring lab and research workspaces remain organized and stocked, facilitate lab orientations/tours, and monitoring Discovery Lab access.

Employment Opportunities
Peer Lab Specialists
In addition to the responsibilities of Peer Lab Assistants, Peer Lab Specialists are responsible for helping to enforce lab usage and safety policies, overseeing Peer Lab Assistants, providing research support to Undergraduate Research Experiences hosted in the lab, and overseeing in-person instrument training checkoffs. Peer Lab Specialists can specialize in one of the Discovery Lab’s Technical Spaces, gaining additional knowledge and experience maintaining equipment and training users.
