Student Volunteers & Employment

The Discovery Lab is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to take the lead in managing lab Technical Spaces and directing programs.

The lab’s team of volunteer and paid Peer Leaders are trained to operate the Discovery Lab’s specialized instruments, analyze data, communicate research findings, and support other lab users to transform their ideas into reality.

Volunteer Opportunities

Peer Lab Assistants

Peer Lab Assistants work with Peer Lab Technicians and Discovery Lab faculty and staff to ensure programs hosted in the lab run smoothly. Their primary responsibilities are to maintain Discovery Lab essential infrastructure and ensure lab and research workspaces remain organized and stocked, facilitate lab orientations/tours, monitor Discovery Lab access, and support Discovery Lab sponsored research activities.

Employment Opportunities

Peer Lab Technicians

In addition to the responsibilities of Peer Lab Assistants, Peer Lab Technicians are undergraduate students who are responsible for ensuring Discovery Lab users can work effectively and safely in the lab. Primary responsibilities include maintaining lab instruments & equipment, training users on how to safely and appropriately utilize lab instruments, providing research support to student projects, and enforcing lab usage and safety policies. Peer Lab Technicians can specialize in one of the Discovery Lab’s Technical Spaces, gaining additional knowledge and experience maintaining equipment and training users.
